I have done a few reviews of Hendrickson/Rose’s Deeper Connections series of DVD based Bible Studies. When I saw the Tabernacle DVD Bible Study kit available for review, I was very interested in checking it out. While it isn’t one of the Deeper Connection series that I have grown very fond of, this one had caught my attention as well.
Similar to the Deeper Connection series, this review will be covering many of the different items included since this is the complete kit that I am reviewing. While I didn’t receive everything that is included in the DVD Kit, I did receive the videos and Leaders and Participant Guides which is the major portion of the kit. The full kit includes a DVD, a Leader’s Guide, a Participant’s Guide, Tabernacle pamphlet, Powerpoint presentation to use in the study if wanted, and PDFs of promotional flyers, banners, graphics, etc to promote your Tabernacle Bible Study.
I am very happy that Rose Publishing and their new parent company Hendrickson allowed me to check it out so I could do this review. I received electronic copies of the materials so I cannot speak to the physical quality of what you get with this kit – only the content.
The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”

I have gotten a little spoiled looking at Hendrickson-Rose’s Deeper Connection series DVD-based Bible Studies. While this one is not part of the Deeper Connection series, Hendrickson-Rose still does a nice job of creating a well put together Bible Study Kit.
You will experience teachings from Pastor Shawn Barnard on the Tabernacle and the symbolism that is prevalent and what it means to us today. I’m not sure I agree with every point that Pastor Barnard states (more about that in a bit), but he does tend to keep his teachings biblically based in most cases.
In this kit, you will get a DVD of all 6 study sessions that cover (1) the Tabernacle, (2) the Altar of Burnt Offering, (3) the Bronze Laver, (4) the Lampstand, (5) The Table of Bread and Altar of Incense, and (6) the Veil, Ark and Mercy Seat. You will also get the Leader Guide which makes it so you do not have to be an expert on the subject but walks you through everything you need to know to either study it for yourself or to lead a group in this Bible study. A Participant’s Guide is also included. If you need extra ones, you can order them individually as well. You will also get a pamphlet on the Tabernacle and a PowerPoint presentation to use in your study as well as additional materials and files to help you promote the Bible Study if you wish.
Like the Deeper Connection series, the Leaders Guide and Participants Guide follow the same very nice layout and design. The DVD is a little different though. It is mostly done in a teaching from a pulpit style where Pastor Barnard is on a stage in front of a darkened audience that you sometimes see the back of their heads throughout the video. It’s not bad, just not to the production quality that the Deeper Connection series has kind of spoiled me to expect. There are times where Pastor Barnard is speaking from (or showing clips or animations of) a life-sized Tabernacle recreation, which really does help to put things nicely into perspective in my opinion. Overall, it has a slightly dated feel to it compared to the Deeper Connection series. Had the 25 to 35-minute teaching sessions been done from that recreated tabernacle, I think that would have given it a better feel.
As for the teaching, Pastor Barnard repeats many times that every single thing that is in the Old Testament is a foreshadowing of Christ. I would agree that the major divisions and ideas do exactly that in most cases, however, I think it is a leap to say adamantly that every single thing does. Outside of this one point, the teaching is pretty solid and if you aren’t familiar with the Tabernacle and each of its elements, this DVD-based Bible study would be something that you would benefit from.
If you already know about the Tabernacle and the symbolism in it, you might already know a majority of what is covered in this Bible Study. However, this would be a good option to go through with other people that have not been exposed to the teachings about the Tabernacle.
Overall, I would recommend this Bible study kit to help you better understand the Tabernacle and what the significance is with the symbolism of each section.
I received this material from Rose Publishing in exchange for my completely honest review.

SESSIONS INCLUDED IN THIS BIBLE STUDY:
This Bible Study kit is broken out into 6 separate sessions that are covered in the DVD, Participant Guide, and Leader Guide.
Session 1: Dwell: The Tabernacle (Exodus 25:1-9) with Pastor Shawn Barnard
- Pastor Barnard gives an overview of the different parts of the tabernacle and showing how it points toward Jesus as the fulfillment of what God wanted to do for us.
Session 2: Dwell: Sacrifice: The Altar of Burnt Offering (Exodus 27:1-8) with Pastor Shawn Barnard
- Pastor Barnard breaks down the Altar of Burnt Offering and shows how it foreshadows how Jesus was the required and final sacrifice for our sins.
Session 3: Clean: The Bronze Laver (Exodus 30:17-21) with Pastor Shawn Barnard
- Pastor Barnard looks at the Bronze Laver where the priests would wash before coming before God and shows how the sacrifice of Jesus and the Word of the Lord is what cleanses us today for us to come before God cleansed.
Session 4: Illuminate: The Lampstand (Exodus 25:31-40) with Pastor Shawn Barnard
- Pastor Barnard looks at the lampstand used in the tabernacle to give light to the Holy Place and also how it symbolized Jesus as the True Light of the world and how we are meant to shine His light to the world now.
Session 5: Presence: The Table of Bread and the Altar of Incense (Exodus 25:23-30) with Pastor Shawn Barnard
- Pastor Barnard looks at the Table of Bread and how it foreshadows how Jesus is the Bread of Life and also how the Altar of Incense represented the prayers of the people before God and how he invites us to pray to Him and to be able to relate to Him in intimacy.
Session 6: Separated, Exposed and Covered: The Veil, the Ark, and the Mercy Seat (Exodus 26:31-33) with Pastor Shawn Barnard
- Pastor Barnard breaks down the symbolism of the veil, the ark and the Mercy Seat showing how love and justice collided at the cross and God’s wrath was satisfied and we can accept the atonement that Jesus provided for us when he died and was resurrected to atone for our sins.
BREAKDOWN OF EACH ITEM:
DVD VIDEO (ISBN: 978-1596366381)
As I mentioned previously in this review, it is based all on the digital content and not the physical content. So, I received links to watch the videos from Rose Publishing to watch each of the sessions included in the DVD that comes with the kit. The videos range from around 25 to 35 minutes in length.
Each video has a nice introduction to it giving an overview of the topics that will be covered within the session. On some of them, you actually see Pastor Barnard on site at a life-size Tabernacle recreation which I appreciated. I think it’s better to see something like that vs. just seeing illustrations all the time.
As for the lessons, they are done in a teaching/lecture/sermon type setting where Pastor Barnard is standing on a stage with a stained glass looking backdrop. You often can see the back of the heads of the audience that he was speaking to at the time of the recording.
As I eluded to earlier, in the sessions, Pastor Barnard does state quite often that “everything in the Old Testament is a foreshadowing of Christ” or “Christ fulfills every single thing in the Old Testament”. While I agree that this is true of the larger picture and greater elements in the Old Testament, I can’t say I agree that every single verse in the Old Testament is something that Christ fulfills. Maybe it was just the way it was presented or the way that I read into his statements like this. I’m not sure. But outside of this portion, the content is good.
LEADER GUIDE (ISBN: 978-1596366398)
The kit comes with a physical copy and my understanding is that it also comes with a digital PDF copy of the Leader Guide that you can use on your digital device if desired. My review is based on the digital copy that I received from Rose Publishing. Each of the six sessions has very helpful ideas for group leaders on how to prepare, set up and conduct the Bible study meetings, Tips for preparation for before the meeting, how to open the session, and so much more. Clear instructions are vital in my opinion and Rose did a very nice job accomplishing just that. The leader/facilitator should have no issues running a Bible study using the DVD and this leader guide as they walk you through the study step-by-step as a leader, even if they are not an experienced Bible Study leader.
PARTICIPANT GUIDE (ISBN: 978-1596366404)
You get one copy of the 104-page Participant Guide with the Bible Study Kit, however, my review is based on the digital copy that I received from Rose Publishing. It really has a good use of Discussion Questions, Key Scriptures, multiple charts, space for writing your thoughts, ideas, and notes. Not just in the content for the actual meeting and viewing of the particular DVD session, but it as nice that that they included an additional 4 to 5 pages for each session that has Personal Reflection and Further Investigation sections that tie into the Bible study to do during the days between the session meetings that help support the sessions. It ties in perfectly with this DVD Bible Study Kit and allows for continued reflection during the week when you aren’t meeting for this Bible Study. Very nicely done!
TABERNACLE PAMPHLET (ISBN: 978-1890947996)
I can’t really speak to this pamphlet as I did not receive a copy of it for my review. But, from what I can see of it online at Christianbook.com with the previews, it looks like a very nice resource.
POWERPOINT CD-ROM (ISBN: 978-1890947743)
I can’t really speak to this PowerPoint quality looks like unfortunately. There are a few slides worth of previews on Christianbook.com, but not really enough to get a feel for what the quality of the slides is.
PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS (INCLUDED IN THE KIT ONLY)
I would have liked to have seen what these materials look like. I would assume that they are just for promoting an upcoming Bible Study that uses the Tabernacle DVD-Based Bible Study Kit as its material.
This is the part where I get to tell you about how I like or dislike this Bible Study Kit in a detailed manner.
MY OVERVIEW OF ENTIRE BIBLE STUDY KIT:
Ease of Use:
This DVD-based Bible Study Kit is put together very well for the portions that I was able to look at. Each of the resources that I was able to review really ties in so well with each other from both a design and content perspective.
MY CHRISTIAN REVIEWER RATINGS:
Below, we have the overall ratings that I would give to this particular Bible Study kit with a 1 to 10 range.
Quality: N/A – Typically when I rate Bibles and books, this Quality section is based on the physical quality and/or durability of the physical copy. Since I cannot attest to this due to reviewing PDFs and video files, I am actually going to leave this one as “n/a” or Not Applicable. Once I end up with a hard copy in my hands, I will update this rating accordingly. For now, I will not factor it into my overall final rating, but if we were to talk about content and quality of the video portion, I would rate it fairly high (mid 8’s).
Appearance: 8.3 – Overall, the appearance and design of the content are pretty good. The “print” materials are nicely designed and have a similar feel and approach. Nicely done on those. As for the video lessons, it felt more like a recorded session rather than a personal teaching like what I have become to expect from Hendrickson-Rose (like in their Deeper Connection Series, which are excellent).
Value: 9.0 – As for the content alone, the Leader and Participant Guides are done very nice and very valuable. The content of the video teachings is also very good other than the one portion I previously mentioned about Pastor Barnard saying that literally, everything in the Old Testament is a foreshadowing of Christ. The ideas and concepts are, yes, but not every single verse. That’s just my opinion though – I will let you make your own determination on that topic.
Innovation: 8.2 – Well, this part is tough – as for the Leader and Participant Guide, this is the same very nice quality that I have seen in their Deeper Connection Series. I really like the layout and format of these two guides. I can’t speak for the CD-ROM or pamphlet as I did not receive a copy of that material, but the concepts of them are good. I was not a huge fan of the video part where it was more of a recording of a lecture/sermon/teaching. I feel it could have been done a little more modern and/or creative! But then again, Hendrickson-Rose has kind of spoiled me with their wonderful Deeper Connections Series Bible Studies.
Other/Wildcard: N/A – No real wildcards to speak of.
Overall Rating: 8.5 out of 10
