Thomas Nelson’s Ever Faithful 365-Day Devotional review – Rating: 7.9

Thomas Nelson's Ever Faithful - A 365-Day Devotional by David Jeremiah
I have not had a chance to do much reading of Dr. David Jeremiah as of yet.  I was intrigued to see what one of his devotional books might look like.  So, I requested a copy of this book for review from Thomas Nelson’s BookLook Blogger program.  This particular devotional is a year-long daily devotional with 365 short devotional entries – one for each day of the year. Well, technically, there are actually 366 devotions because it does have one in there for Feb 29th (leap year). Overall, I was impressed by the quality and ease of use that this devotional provided with one exception. There was a minor issue that I had with the binding that I felt I had to pass along to you. Please read further to find out more about this.  If it wasn’t for this binding issue, I would have rated this higher than I am rating it now.

I would give this book a 7.9 out of my normal 10 point rating scale.  On a “5 star” scale that some websites use, I would give it a high 4-star rating.

In full disclosure, I was not required or requested by Thomas Nelson or BookLook Bloggers to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising

I have not had a chance to really dive into many books by Dr. David Jeremiah, let alone a devotional book. Dr. David Jeremiah is the pastor at Shadow Mountain Community Church in San Diego and has written books and appeared on television and radio and much more.

This “Ever Faithful” 365-Day Devotional book by him was put together to help Christians grow in their faith on a daily basis rather than looking at their faith as a single one-time event and never grow beyond that. This book was created with material from two of his existing devotional books, being “The Upward Call” and “Hope for Today

From a content perspective, I really liked this devotional. Granted I didn’t read every single daily devotion, but I did go through quite a few of them and really like it.

From a physical perspective, I really liked the look of the book and the feel of it. It is a hardbound book with a cloth cover on it. The paper is very nice and the print is very good. It even has a nice little silver ribbon marker in it to keep your place (in case you don’t follow it from a calendar perspective, I suppose). I do have to call out one thing though with the binding of the copy that I received. My full review has the pictures of the issue, but basically, the end sheets at the front of the book look like they might be pulling too tight, causing the Smyth sewing actually put a 1/16″ tear in the end-sheet on the bottom two stitch points. I have read other reviews where some others have commented about the cover coming completely off. I don’t’ think mine will do that necessarily, but knowing myself, I will be very cautious with handling this book. I really like the looks of it a lot and don’t want to do something that could possibly cause it to tear more.

Aside from that binding issue, I really love the look of this book and the contents are great. I really think this book will help people to draw closer to Jesus and walk a closer faith with him if they follow through the book. If it wasn’t for the minor binding issue in my copy, I would have rated this higher.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for this review from BookLook Bloggers and all opinions are my own.

The Goal of Book:

The goal of the author in writing this book is to help people to go beyond looking at their faith as a one-time event in their lives. Rather, the author wants us to know that our faith is a living, breathing relationship with God that we need to nurture every day of our lives. The author did do a good job with this book to help draw people closer to a continuing relationship with Jesus.

My Favorite Part:

I really loved the look and feel of this book. I really like how brief but practical each of the daily devotions are. They are easy to follow as they are very well written and arranged.  I just wish the binding had been a little more carefully looked at during production.  Maybe that’s just the copy I received though. If your copy comes with the same issue mine has, as long as you’re careful with it, it shouldn’t be a problem for you.

The Issue With the Binding:

As I mentioned above, the copy I received had a slight issue with the binding.  Now, I don’t think this is going to be detrimental to the book, necessarily, but I wanted to bring it up since I read other reviews that had mentioned something similar. Here is a picture showing the issue on the end sheet that I see in my copy. Just click on the picture below and it will open in a new tab/window and you can zoom in to really see the issue.

Showing the issue with the sewing pulling and tearing the end page a little bit near the bottom 2 or 3 Smyth sewn stitch points.

Outside of any production issues (like my minor binding issue – or issues some other reviews have mentioned), this is a book I would highly recommend if you like daily devotionals. I loved how it was designed and laid out and while the devotionals are nice and short, they also are very deep. You can easily get a lot out of this book!
