B&H Academic’s Going Deeper with New Testament Greek book & chart view – rating 9.6

B&H Academic's Going Deeper GreekI have a hard time resisting a good book that covers ways to better understand Scripture in a progressively deeper manner. I was very pleased when I was able to get a copy of B&H Academic’s “Going Deeper with New Testament Greek” by Andreas J. Köstenberger, Benjamin L Merkle and Robert L. Plummer. This particular book is more on an academic / textbook level, but to refine it even more, it is what you would consider a secondary or intermediate level academic book. It assumes that you have been through one or two classes in Biblical Greek already as it goes over Going Deeper Greek Chart
grammar and syntax of the New Testament. For any serious student of Greek, this book along with the 6-page foldout chart is a very valuable resource for taking your learning to the intermediate level.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to dive deeper into their understanding of New Testament original language skills.

I received a copy of this book from B&H Academic for me to do a review on it. In full disclosure, I was not required or requested by B&H Academic to write a positive review.

I would give this book a 9.6 out of my normal 10 point rating scale. On a “5 star” scale that some websites use, I would give it a very solid 5 star rating.

QUICK SUMMARY:

**See all sections below for full detailed review**
This intermediate academic book on New Testament Greek is aimed toward an audience that has already done the basics at Greek including common vocabulary, foundational principles of syntax and have done some translating of New Testament Scriptures. It really is written more toward the college or seminar students in a sequential manner that actually makes this book fun to follow along. The authors do an excellent job of laying out the purpose of each chapter, providing examples and practice with sentences and vocabulary. But to be honest, I really liked how they did a “Built-In Reader” as they call it where they take a section of Scripture and break it down for the student to work on translation. I really appreciate how they took so many resources and combined them into a single book that really will take your Greek understanding to the next level. The chart (separate purchase) is a very nice 6-page laminated folded “cheat sheet” if you will and is keyed off of the book – it covers the syntactical categories covered in the book and also information about NT textual criticism and more. Together, these two items are invaluable to anyone wanting to go to the next level with their Greek. Highly recommended. I received a copy of this book and chart in exchange for my honest review.

649851: Charts for Intermediate Greek Grammar and Syntax Charts for Intermediate Greek Grammar and Syntax

Keyed to Köstenberger, Merkle, and Plummer’s best-selling Going Deeper with New Testament Greek, Charts for Intermediate Greek Grammar and Syntax is the premier “cheat sheet” for Greek syntax and exegesis.

This set of folding laminated pages covers all traditional syntactical categories (for example, uses of the genitive, rules about the Greek article, possible translations of the imperfect tense), as well as information about New Testament textual criticism, current summaries on Verbal Aspect debates, and steps on doing Greek word studies. Each syntactical category includes an example from the Greek New Testament (with Greek text quoted) and an accompanying English translation. The specific word or phrase in question is in bold font in both the Greek and English text.

With these laminated sheets by your side, you will never waste time flipping through your intermediate grammar looking for that syntactical term or grammatical function you can’t quite remember.

The ease of reading this book (and chart) was very good. Good printing and opaque paper make this easy to read the text on every page with very little show-through.

Ease of Use:

Readability of this book was very good. It is very thorough and I really appreciated the efforts that went into organizing this material. I think this is possibly the best “next step” to follow introductory Greek.
