IVP Academic’s Dictionary of Biblical Imagery resource review – Rating 9.7

IVP Dictionary of Biblical ImageryIVP Academic generously sent me a copy of their Dictionary of Biblical Imagery for me to do a review of this fantastic resource.   If you are looking for a resource for your studies that can really help you with the different images used in Scripture, this resource would be an excellent addition to your library  I have used this resource when doing my past few personal studies as well as studies in preparing for messages at my church and have found helpful information each time.  I would highly recommend this if you are interested in learning about different imagery used in Scriptures such as images, symbols, motifs, metaphors, figures of speech and literary patterns.  Very worth reading if you’re interested in helping others or even becoming a professional counselor.

I would give this book a 9.7 out of my normal 10 point rating scale.  On a “5 star” scale that some websites use, I would give it a solid 5 star rating.

QUICK SUMMARY:

IVP Academic’s “Dictionary of Biblical Imagery” really is a unique find and such a valuable resource. It was in the Book of the Year list from Christianity Today in 1999. It is not your typical Bible dictionary that covers more of the basics of what specific places, people or things are about.  Instead, this information-packed book goes into more of the behind the scenes part of Scriptures and looks at the images, metaphors, figures of speech, literary patterns and symbolism used in the Word of God.  If you are someone who has any interest in studying the Scriptures in addition to reading them, then I would classify this book as a must have.  Keep in mind, this will not replace the typical Bible Dictionary that you need, however, this will supplement it so nicely.  Highly recommended!  This one is yet another IVP book that I will reference quite often in my personal library.  I received a copy of this book in exchange for this review from IVP and all opinions are my own.
