Baker Book’s Meet Generation Z book review – Rating 9.5

Baker Books' Meet Generation Z by James Emery White

I requested a copy of Meet Generation Z by James Emery White from Baker Books’ BakerBookBloggers program so I could check it out for a review.  This topic of the younger generation (Generation Z) is something that has been on my heart for some time now and this book is specifically geared toward their culture, how history helped to form them, how they relate to God and the church and other things.  It is very well written and I feel that leadership in churches all over the country need to read this to help them understand how to more effectively relate to this generation.

I would give this book a 9.5 out of my normal 10 point rating scale.  On a “5 star” scale that some websites use, I would give it a 5 star rating.

In full disclosure, I was not required or requested by Baker Books to write a positive review.  The opinions I have expressed are my own. Meet Generation Z: Understanding and Reaching the New Post-Christian World” by James Emery White is a fascinating study in the younger generation and how they relate to either the church, the Lord or to generic spirituality.  This book is written very well bringing forth the statistics and how they have changed from one generation to the next.  The author shows the dramatic culture shift that comes with this younger generation and how the church in general needs to be open to changes in order to reach this new generation.  Think of this book as a guidebook on ideas on what needs to be done to reach Generation Z.  The author skillfully provides practical advice that could change the future of how the church evangelizes.  I would highly recommend this book for anyone in church leadership that is interested in long-term survival of the church and reaching this new generation (which both tie together very much).  I received a copy of this book in exchange for this review from Baker Books and all opinions are my own.

By James Emery White / Baker BooksMove over, boomers, Xers, and millennials, there’s a new generation taking the stage—and they represent a seismic cultural shift! Physical Characteristics:
•224 pages
•Dimensions: 5.5 x 0.6 x 8.5 inches

Goal of Book:

The author’s goal is to raise a much-needed awareness that we live in a very pivotal time in the life of our culture and church.  This pivotal time is in relation to how the culture of the younger generation relates to God and to the church (if at all) and how with this awareness, we need to re-evaluate how to reach this new generation, which is not the way it has worked for so many years in the past.

My Favorite Part:

I really appreciated all the work that the author put into bringing forth the statistics that really show how this young generation thinks about the church, religion, spirituality, etc.  It really is very thought-provoking and makes you pause to think about if you are ready to effectively reach this Generation Z or not.  Challenging to say the least.

The further I got into reading this book, the harder it was to put down.  It is a very readable, but so thought-provoking and challenging.  This really is a book that I would recommend for all churches as this topic is something that we really all need to pay attention to and act upon to reach the young generation.
