Baker Book’s Remember & Return devotional review – Rating 9.5

Remember & Return: Rekindling Your Love for the SaviorI have a great deal of respect for John MacArthur and his teachings.  However, this is the first time I’ve actually read any of his books.  I found that this 31 day devotional to be exceptional.  If you are looking for a very good devotional on helping you grow your love for Christ.  Quite honestly, this 31-day devotional is one that I would highly recommend to anyone!

QUICK SUMMARY:

“Remember & Return: Rekindling Your Love for the Savior” is a 31-day devotional that is fantastic.  It is centered around growing your love for Christ and does just that.  John MacArthur is a trusted pastor, teacher and as this is my first book of his that I have read, I can now add author to that list.  His teaching in this devotional is very solid.  I would not classify this as the typical “quick devotional” where you spend 5 minutes each day.  Each of these devotionals is approximately 6 pages long (small dimension book of about 5 x 7), which for me personally, is perfect in content and depth.  This devotional is 31-days long by design, so not something that you have to commit an entire year to like some devotionals.  However, with that said, I can guarantee that I will be revisiting this devotional multiple times throughout the year.  Overall, this devotional is highly recommended.  I received a copy of this book in exchange for this review from Baker Books and all opinions are my own.

Goal of Book:

From the back cover of the book:

In this thirty-one-day devotional, John MacArthur takes you down a biblically prescribed path as you rediscover who Christ is, what He has done, and how you must respond.  Each entry will move you from understanding to application to reflection and prayer, with a goal of rekindling your first love for Christ.

I feel that the author has done just that.  It really is an excellent devotional to help you rediscover Christ and get you back to your first and most important love.

My Favorite Part:

My favorite part of this book is how the author really laid down a solid and biblically sound foundation to pull us back to an understanding of who Christ is and what he did.  Each one of these devotion takes you further and further into a growing appreciation and love for Christ and what he has done.  Very well written and solid.

My Least Favorite Part:

This is not a “least favorite” part for me – in fact quite the opposite… but if you’re wanting or expecting a quick 5 minute devotional as you’re drinking your morning coffee or getting ready to head out to work, then this one may not be for you.  There is a lot of good meat that you can really spend easily 15 or more minutes per each devotional time.

Recommendation:

While there were a few parts that were a little bit slower, I honestly can recommend this book.  I found it to be a very good read. I know some other reviewers didn’t care for it as much, but I would not necessarily agree with some of their comments.  I really did enjoy this book.

Who Would Enjoy This Book:

Anyone that is interested in a very good devotional that doesn’t want to do a full year-long set of devotions will find great benefit from this devotional book.  As previously stated, the devotions are a tad longer than the typical “quick” or “5-minute” devotions, but very well worth the read for sure!
