Moody Publishers’ On Preaching book review – Rating 9.7

Moody Publishers’ “On Preaching” by H.B. Charles, Jr. is a very good find.  H.B. Charles covers some wonderful topics and pointers for new ministers as well as seasoned ones.  This book will be something that stays in my library for many future references.  Much appreciation to Moody Publishers for sending me a copy to review.  It is a very good book and found it very helpful personally.

I would give this book a 9.7 out of my normal 10 pointrating scale.  On a “5 star” scale that some websites use, I would give it a pretty solid 5 star rating.

In full disclosure, I was not required or requested by Moody Publishers to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 <> : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

“On Preaching” is a very easy to read and engaging book to read.  It is subtitled “Personal & Pastoral Insights for the Preparation and Practice of Preaching”, which really does a succinct job of describing the contents.  The book is broken into three parts with seven to twelve short chapters in each parts.  This book is very interesting and refreshing in the aspect that it is not a book on how to preach like you would get in seminary.  Rather, it is a book of nuggets of wisdom that the author has learned through his life in “the trenches” of ministry.  Almost like a book of wisdom for those that want to preach the Word of God.  Highly recommended and well worth reading it!  I received a copy of this book in exchange for this review from Moody Publishers and all opinions are my own.

Goal of Book:

The authors’ goal is to simply share some of his findings and wisdom relating to preaching the Word of God that he has discovered on his journey as a minister.  The author does a very nice job in the content and deliver of the material and is very down to earth with his “use what you find beneficial in my material” approach.  Very refreshing and extremely practical indeed.

My Favorite Part:

It may seem a little funny, but the title of chapter 23 really caught my attention.  At first it was one of those “WHAT?!?!?” moments until I read it.  The chapter is aptly titled “Indecent Exposure in the Pulpit”.  This really caught me off guard at first.  Basically, the author shares about how we should never embarrass someone by using them in an illustration without their permission.  Such simple wisdom that sometimes can slip through if we aren’t careful.  Also, chapter 21 where he shares about your preaching style was very good in my opinion.  So often, we have seen people that want to mimic this person or that person regarding their preaching styles, but he encourages us to learn from others, but to develop our own style rather than being a parrot so to speak.

My Least Favorite Part:

To be completely honest, there isn’t a lot in this book that I didn’t like.  I may not use every point that the author makes, but then I found many nuggets of wonderful wisdom in this book.

This book really would end up being more of a resource that you could come back to multiple times.  There is a lot in this book that I will come back to many times as I prepare for, grow in and and work at delivering the Word of God.  So I would highly recommend it as a reference book for anyone, be it pastor, elder or any layperson who honestly feels called to preach and teach the Word of God to others.
