Moody Publishing’s The Counselor book review – Rating 9.9

Moody Publishers’ “The Counselor: Straight Talk About the Holy Spirit” by A.W. Tozer is an excellent book to read if you are interested in learning about the Holy Spirit.  Tozer shows how much of the American church seemingly has either an incorrect view on the Holy Spirit or is simply too afraid to talk about Him.  To be honest, this is my first Tozer book that I have read.  I know I will be reading much more of his work in the near future.
I would give this book a 9.9 out of my normal 10 point rating scale.  On a “5 star” scale that some websites use, I would give it a 5 star rating.

In full disclosure, I was not required or requested by Moody to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 <> : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

“The Counselor: Straight Talk About the Holy Spirit” is a very engaging book to read.  This book is actually an edited version of two of Tozer’s other books.  Those are “When He Comes” and “The Tozer Pulpit, Vol. 2”.  I have not had a chance to read those two books, but will at some point in the near future.  The Counselor book is very well written and extremely insightful.  It has very convicting points in it and Tozer does a great job of explaining who the Holy Spirit is, why we need Him and how we can have a relationship with Him. The book is laced throughout with many Scripture references that are very pertinent to the Holy Spirit and how we should be yearning toward a relationship with Him.  I really liked how balanced and sound this book was regarding the topic of the Holy Spirit.  Probably the best book on Him that I have read so far.  I will be reading this book more than once for sure.  It is going into the reference section of my personal library.  Highly recommended to say the least.  I received a copy of this book in exchange for this review from Moody Publishers and all opinions are my own.

667961: The Counselor: Straight Talk About the Holy Spirit The Counselor: Straight Talk About the Holy Spirit
By A.W. Tozer / Moody Publishers

The Counselor will leave you with a deep longing to be filled with the blessed Spirit. Gifted at bringing lofty thoughts down low, Tozer explains clearly who the Spirit is and what it means to know Him. May The Counselor help you to cultivate sweet communion with God, that you may have joy, peace, life, and power in Him.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Paperback
  • Patent (perfect/square back) bound
  • 192 pages
  • Dimensions:5.25″ wide  x 8” high

Goal of Book:

The authors’ goal is to show who the Holy Spirit is, how we need Him in our daily lives ,and that we should be desiring to know Him more intimately every day.  Tozer states very clearly how we can have a very intimate relationship with Him.  Too often, the church overlooks the correct perspective of the Holy Spirit confines Him into what we want to make of Him rather than correctly looking at the Scriptures regarding Him.

My Favorite Part:

This book has a strong scriptural basis and I sincerely appreciate how it doesn’t give in to any fads, whims or even incorrect teachings in Christianity, but rather gives practical truth direct from the Word of God relating to the Holy Spirit.  I really appreciated how balanced it is and doesn’t sway to the extremes that many books on the Holy Spirit seem to incorrectly go.  It is VERY well written and extremely helpful, not to mention there are points that are very convicting as you read it.

My Least Favorite Part:

I honestly can’t really come up with anything that I didn’t like about the book.

I don’t think I would recommend this book simply as a one-time read, but rather a resource that you could come back to multiple times.  There is a lot in this book that I will come back to many times as I study and read the Word of God, so I would highly recommend it as a reference book for anyone who honestly desires an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Who Would Enjoy This Book:

If you are seriously interested in gaining a better knowledge of who the Holy Spirit is and how to have a more intimate relationship with Him, you would get a lot out of this book.  Just be prepared for the potential or some heart changes with different Scriptures that this book has put into it..

Chapter 1 – Whenever Jesus Christ Is Glorified, the Holy Spirit Comes
Chapter 2 – The Holy Spirit Is Not Known through the Intellect
Chapter 3 – The Presence and Ministry of the Holy Spirit: All That Jesus Would Be
